Quality Control & VHP Polarization Standards for Export Buyers

For sugar buyers, quality is not a slogan — it is a set of measurable parameters on a specification sheet. This guide explains the figures that matter for VHP raw sugar and how to specify them.

Polarization

Polarization measures sucrose purity, expressed in degrees. VHP (Very High Polarization) sugar typically polarizes around 99.3–99.5° — higher than standard raw sugar — which means more recoverable white sugar per tonne for a refinery. It is the headline quality figure on any VHP contract.

Colour (ICUMSA)

As a raw sugar, VHP carries cane colour and is reported in ICUMSA units on the contract rather than as a fixed retail grade. Refineries decolourize it to ICUMSA 45 white sugar. Buyers should confirm the contracted colour range so their refining team can model the process.

Moisture and other parameters

  • Moisture — affects storage and flow; specified per contract.
  • Grain / particle — relevant for handling and processing.
  • Packaging — bulk vessel or big-bags, agreed per shipment.

How to read a specification sheet

A VHP specification sheet states polarization, colour, moisture and packaging, with the analysis basis. Ask for the current sheet when you request a quote, and confirm which parameters are guaranteed versus typical.

Frequently asked questions

What polarization should I specify for VHP?

VHP typically runs around 99.3–99.5°. Specify your minimum polarization and we will confirm against the current specification sheet per shipment.

Do you provide a specification sheet before contract?

Yes — request a quote and we will send the current VHP specification so your refining team can model yield before committing.
